As I extended my first book to the beginning of humanity, to when people first went off from Asia, due to the discovery of having at least one indigenous forebear and a Negro slave in my origin, the subsequent historical content increased exponentially and I thought it best to divide my story into four parts.

The first book of the quartet, entitled Ample Horizons, covers pre-history and the early days of the republic. In it I briefly present Brazil’s history from a point of view different from the usual text book version, which was written by the victors of the colonizing process. The historical information I present is focused to those aspects pertinent to the lives of the people in question, as well as my special areas of interest which are: ethnography, etymology.

The trail of the first inhabitants snakes along the Earth and arrive in their Pindorama (The Land of Palms) as far back as five hundred years before the coming of our Jesus Christ. There for a thousand years they live and relatively thrive in a way which was best adapted to their environment, until the day when a very different intruder arrived at their shores. This was an event which could be equalled to aliens coming to earth, and their life change forever under the impact of the new colonizing forces.

This leads me to the second half of the 1500’s when my first ancestors appear to have reached our shores and through time struggle to survive in the belief that they were the bringers of civilization and religious salvation to this savage land.

Continuing, by the late 1600’s to early 1700’s most of my other forbears had arrived in the newly named land of Brazil and each these converged towards the wealthy grounds of the General Mines.

The last arrivals, the English contingent, came in the early nineteenth century, also with dreams of adventure and a great amount of daring, and were as all the others engulfed by the vastness of this territory encircled by mountains, never to return to the old continent, until Anastasia.

Book two: Converging Horizons. Almost five hundred years have passed and the families, one by one, turn in the direction of the newly built capital of the state erected at the end of the nineteen century, and there start dreaming dreams at times too great to be tolerated. This is the city that will not forgive mistakes and stones failures along with successes, and sometimes even persecutes innocent the dreamers.

I trace their progress of the four families through time and space along with that of the world in which they live, describing curious customs and stories of those times and, in general, painting the local colour. Finally, in the beginning of the thirties my parents meet in the city of Belo Horizonte where I was also born. I refer to the early days of life in this then budding city, with stories either heard first hand or related to me by the first story tellers of my family.

“Anastasia, the narrator and teller of tales, relates the story of her ancestors, as well as, comes to life from the future to speak to the various characters about the events of those times, the way she used to do when she was a child”.

The third book, Circled Horizons, is the story of Anastasia's Ancestors all the way to the end of the twentieth century.

And finally, the fourth book, Far Horizons, is the story of my immediate family at war with ousiders. A private war against an attempted invasion.

The words I use in my Battle will

My name is Anastasia Persephone and I, apart from author, will also be the narrator of a tale which spans through two thousand and five hundred years.

All of my characters really lived and almost nothing is fictional. I tried to use real names as much as possible, as this is supposed to be a record of our lives, once we were born along the tale, but for the protection of people still alive, I had to use pseudonyms for some of the characters.

Names of people nowadays in Brazil are composed by one or two first names; usually followed by your mother’s surname, which we call our middle names; and ended up by your father’s surname. For women you optionally add your husband’s last surname after that, and on that occasion you may drop your mother’s surname, so as to not have too many names. As you can see it is a much more equalitarian system that respects the rights of women. But it has not always been so as the study of heredity soon shows.

In this saga, through the early centuries, I was truthful as far as basic facts, dates and places, but I had to make assumptions as to people’s motives for the actions I uncovered. On these occasions, usually periods long before my birth, I based myself on: the known local history and economic conditions, on the customs and mores prevailing during those times. The story is then composed of snippets of information put together as in a puzzle. It was only by the end of the 1880’s that birth registry at Notary Public became a law and even then people who lived in the country often found reason to delay such facts as the registration of births and deaths, as well as marriages. It was still the custom of the land to think of the religious ceremony as more important as the civil one. So it was documental archaeology that I had to have done to access more details of my earlier forebears.

When one is writing about people one knows or knew, one will express our impressions and feelings, also based on our observation of the person who telling us the story, apart from just hearing the related facts. There is after all always more than one version of the truth, as facts differ when seen from different points of view. So the reader must be aware that this account is written from my point of view.

The farther backward you can look,

the farther forward you are likely to see.
